If you’ve never had a website before one of the hardest steps to take is simply deciding where to start on your first page. It’s easy to say you’re going to be creating a website your business but once you have WordPress open in front of you it can be hard to know where to start. Fortunately there are a few basic types of pages that every business website should have. With this in mind lets look at how having a contact page, about page, blog and sitemap can help your website start out on the right foot.
This page may be the most important depending on the type of business you have. Once people come to your site and decide they like what they see the next logical step for them will be to contact you. And yet many websites practically hide contact information so that people have to dig to find it. That’s not acceptable in the internet age, where people are practically looking for reasons to leave your site and move on to a competitor’s page. Don’t give them an excuse, have a contact page that clearly displays everything potential clients need to know in order to contact you. Some examples include a phone number, email address, physical address and social media links.
Think of this page as your chance to explain who you are and what you do to anyone who visits your page. As a businessperson you know that you aren’t just selling a product or a service, you are selling yourself. You want to let people know who you are and why they should give you their hard earned money and your about page is a great place to do just this. While this page can be as long as short as you want it’s best to aim for a few paragraphs that are enough to cover all the most important details about your company’s history and current work without being so long that people won’t want to read it.
Blogs are great because they are easy to update so you can keep adding content to your website with minimal investment. If you don’t think of yourself as the blogging type then you might see this page as unnecessary but every business should at least have a blog so that you can post news about your business. This keep visitors updated on what you’re doing and also lets people know that you are still in business. Sometimes the web can feel like a graveyard full of dead businesses that never deleted their website and so people get suspicious when they find a website that hasn’t been updated in months or years. By updating your blog monthly you quickly prove to visitors that you are alive, kicking and ready to work with them.
You may not notice sitemaps when you visit a webpage for the first time but if the site is well built then it likely has one. Sitemaps are pages that map out the different pages on your site in an organized fashion so that they can be found easily by both visitors and search engines. This means that sitemaps are important for technical reasons, if you want people to be able to find your site via Google then you should set up a sitemap. While you only strictly need an XML sitemap for search engines it’s best to also have an HTML sitemap that visitors can use to quickly find any page on your site that they might need to visit.
Addressing The Needs Of Your Visitors
This list is a good place to start but it shouldn’t be seen as comprehensive. Just about every business website should have these four pages but it’s important to go beyond these if you want to create a website that is the best that it can be.
These generic page types work for just about any business but some of the most important pages will be the ones that are designed specifically for the work that you do. Think about menus for restaurants, online stores for companies that sell products over the internet, calendars for businesses that hold important events, and so on. Start out with the basics but keep building on them to create the most complete and effective website possible.
